AFSP: Continuing Education Requirements

If you’re participating in the Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP), it’s important to understand the continuing education (CE) requirements for both exempt and non-exempt tax professionals. The AFSP is designed to help tax preparers enhance their knowledge and skills while also providing clients with the reassurance that you’re up to date on the latest tax laws.

CE Requirements for Exempt and Non-Exempt Preparers

Exempt Tax Preparers

For exempt preparers to participate in the AFSP, you must complete 15 hours of IRS-approved continuing education.

These 15 hours include:

  • 3 hours of federal tax law updates
  • 10 hours of federal tax law topics
  • 2 hours of ethics

Non-Exempt Tax Preparers

For non-exempt preparers, the IRS requires more extensive continuing education to participate in the AFSP. Non-exempt preparers must complete 18 hours of IRS-approved continuing education, which includes:

  • 6 hours of the Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course that covers key tax law changes and updates for the upcoming filing season.
  • 10 hours of federal tax law topics
  • 2 hours of ethics

Both exempt and non-exempt preparers must renew their PTIN and complete these education requirements by December 31 to receive an AFSP Record of Completion and participate in the program for the upcoming tax season.
