Course Description:
California tax preparers often encounter clients who have not filed their federal taxes in multiple years. This course equips CTEC preparers with the knowledge and skills needed to assist these individuals in becoming compliant while maximizing their tax benefits. You will learn how to determine filing requirements and understand IRS penalty relief programs. By the end of this course, you will be able to confidently guide non-filers through the process of filing past-due returns while ensuring they receive any refunds or credits they are entitled to.

- Determine when a taxpayer is required to file based on income thresholds and filing status.
- Understand IRS tax laws that impact non-filers, including state penalties and collection procedures.
- Explain the IRS enforcement strategies for non-filers.
- Assist clients in retrieving lost records and requesting IRS tax transcripts.
- Identify opportunities for penalty relief, refund claims, and tax credits available to non-filers.
- Guide clients through the process of voluntary compliance and long-term tax planning to prevent future non-filing issues.
